Thats been my issue of late. Been hovering over issues so far out of my control, that they start controlling me.
I think its fairly safe to say, that no matter whats approaching through the fall out of 2020’s shenanigans, they will be nearly glacial in speed reaching everyday people. Or as Hemingway put it “Slowly, then all at once” (refering to going bankrupt, but financial bankruptcy is a good analogy to societal bankruptcy) Watch a utoob vid of a glacier calving, and you see what I mean.
I spent 24 hours with friends New Years day into the second. Spent hours monkeying with kayaks, talking kayaks, white water skills, describing long boating and explaining the differences to one who has never paddled a long boat. 24 hours of ZERO World Crisis. One short point where I was asked about Christmas Booms and my opinion. But that was it. The rest was good food, good people, good (but not in excess 😉) drink, and KAYAKY STUFF!!!
I needed the break. Oh did I need that break.
Sadly, the river run we had scheduled canceled with an illness. One of the key people felt ill and backed out. And that started an avalanche of same. B and I (more me than B) decided to hold off for lack of support. Kayaking is inherently risky from word ‘go’ (kinda like flying,,, take offs are optional, landings are mandatory. ) and I know I am the weak link that will likely need someone to save my ass in fast moving water. I didn’t want to burden a single person to that reponsibility, among other reasons. 🥶 A larger group is one mitigant to that risk.
Rolling classes are opening back up soon: indoor pool, good instructors, and small class sizes. Let the PTwB play their games, none of us can stop the juggernaut they have created; I will do what I need to lessen my burden on others, doing one of the things I love. I still don’t ‘know’ that WW kayaking is my thing, but the skills needed to handle a wild river are very applicable to heavy seas, and I DO want to play in oceans, wide open lakes and such. Rivers can help me build my skills and they are a lot more plentiful here than open water.
A short vid of where we were supposed to ‘play’ Saturday.
Strangely enough, there is plenty to give thanks for during this holiday season. If you are upright and breathing, and preferably, thinking for yourself: three excellent reasons to give thanks.
So why is it that TYRANNY wants to clamp down on the day, limit travel and congregation, even celebration of such an innocuous event.
Simple reason; people talk to people. Meatspace is not controllable so they intend to limit how many meet there. And they KNOW people self censor on public media sites, even in Zoom and other socially distanced meeting vehicles. (Despite one ‘Tard deciding he could jack off during such,,,, but then, he was a member of their ranks and rules don’t apply the same way, do they?)
The Deplorables are agitated, the controllers are aware of it and squelching the noise pattern as much as they can (think they can actually. In all reality, the harder they clamp down, the louder the signal gets. People are upset, and with good reason. And more and more are asking questions and waking up.) This season falls at a very tactically negative (for them) time and they are fully aware of it. Therefore they MUST demand our compliance in fear.
But like the boy who cried wolf, the warning has worn thin and pale, no longer carries the same direness, and many are already awake to the bullshit.
While “the fix is in” it isnt over with. Even now, they have to abide by certain rules and those rules don’t benefit them. If they can get through to the “win”, those rules will be annulled, and they will have full control; but they aren’t there yet. Dec 14th is when the electoral college convenes. Thats over two weeks away, and this glorious Tday means people who are awake will be congregating with people asking questions. The ranks of the awake will grow. Demand for the RINOs to do their damned job PROPERLY will grow, the seeds of discontent are rooted and growing. And the tyrants are well aware of it.
They also know if they miss now, they are going to be on the otherside of the guns. The side they intended to use on us.
Get together, enjoy the day, the food, the spirit of the day. Give thanks for your life despite the Maddog2020 year we have had
And answer the questions that some are asking. Be nice, but be firm: this shit ain’t over by a long shot.
I don’t normally do write prompts since I tend to write several times a day without being prompted. My brain never stops churning and there are times where the writing muse takes over and I ‘stop everything’ long enough to set down some notes. If I don’t, the idea scatters like a murder of Crows in a corn field being shot at. (You did know that a group of crows is called a murder, right?)
Todays writing prompt that I don’t use (🤪) was inspired by a short conversation on FB. “When did the kayak bug strike you?”
Well, it wasn’t in July of 2018, though that was the first time I owned one. The real bug bite was in ’92, when I lived in O-side Kaliforniastan. I lived across the street from a custom surfboard shop and the owner lived above it. I liked the atmosphere of the shop and would hang out when Shem, my GF, was in her creative phase and a complete terror to be near. He was getting out of the shortboard craze and going back to long boards when one of his customers came in, wanting a repair for a sea kayak. When they showed up with it, I was lost. Those lines and curves, just bedazzled me. Then I saw that same kayak out in the surf off La Jolla, near seal rock. I watched it out there for two hours, skimming the waves, backsurfing, rolling under breakers to come up the other side and get back out in the swells. I was in awe.
I wanted one.
A short spurt of shopping.
Hope sank like the Titanic with TWO holes in it. There was no way I could even consider $4000 for a boat that only held one person and was twice as long as my car (not quite, but I was driving a Fiat X/1-9 then. Where do you strap a kayak to a two seater sportscar? ) (and as I have found, the intial cost of boat/lathe/car/house, is just the admission fee, its the add-ons that get ya!)
26 years later, serendipity dropped the Carolina in my lap and the ramp up began. 2 years later ,,,
Three skin on frame kayaks, two white water yaks, and a stripbuilt expedition boat in process. And I have more investment in the peripheral gear than the boats themselves. Spray skirts, PFDs, wetsuits, dry tops, dry bags, floatbags, etc. I can outfit another paddler my size without stretching things and two if one has their own PFD.
And like I saw another person say, “I’m still on the swim team” meaning. I haven’t learned to roll yet. Oh, but so so close. Just need more seat time and a couple more sessions with someone in the know. B swears I only need one more session and I’ll be rollin’, but I am a pessimist. I know how stubborn I can be. I practice the different motions so the muscles know the routine, and keep the dialogue in my head. Soon,,,,
But that was the day I knew I wanted to kayak. I can even tell you the make and the designers name. It was a P&H Biadarka designed by Derek Hutchinson. I knew NOTHING about either the boat or Derek until recent years, but I remember the owner being VERY proud of his boat and who designed it. Now, I own books written by Derek, made a paddle based on one of his designs, and used some of his lines when designing Serena.
Talk about a long gestation period for a bug!!! LOL. It was just one of those things that kept getting shuffled to the side or to the back burner to simmer a bit longer. It was never a priority in my world, but it NEVER went away either.
I’ll be back at the running commentary of this Asylum we call 2020 tomorrow.
Had to take a break from all the hoopla.
Took Serena out on Saturday for her one year birthday float. She is one year old this week.
Then I took out both of the plastiYaks; Betty and Jefe. Water isn’t flowing well enough to realy get them playing, but I was able to stretch some techniques and push my comfort levels. Jefe is strange to me. Initial stability is great, secondary is great and its there you hit a wall. Trying to get that boat over on its side is a fight unless you throw your upper body at. Then she’ll slip right over. Hip flicks are different to: I can feel that hump between secondary and over . Almost like a cam action going on. All of the other boats are smooth so the difference is noticable. Some are so smooth (Duh!kee, Betty) that they will bring you up and BACK over the other side if you get too energetic.
Honestly, I need to spend an hour or two in a kayak everyday, or minimal every other day. When I sat in Serena, I was twitchy and nervous¤. After playing for an hour, I settled down and was able to start pushing it a bit. Edging, stern draws, slicing into and out of eddy lines. Even went through some rougher water. Did some fast water ferrying, even went up stream and only had to portage once.
Then taking the plastiyaks out, not one issue. No twitchyness, no anxiety, other than the ‘dont really want to get wet’, but I was able to get in Jefe and just head out. No hanging in the shallows ‘adjusting’. Played for an hour or so, then went and grabbed Betty off the truck and same thing (recall, she is just as tippy as Duh!kee is and Duhk has tried to kill me: LOL.) No issues! I was even playing with getting her to dive while headed upstream in the narrows. She didn’t dive, but she did get her decks washed off. I think the water needs to be faster to get a dive,
But, I feel MUCH better than I did. My shoulder isn’t achy, my lower back is feeling supple again, and my anger is blunted for the time being. (And I am shopping for a 7mm wet suit; that water is COLD. I may just breakdown and go full drysuit, but I’m still choking on their price tags.)
Oh, and if anyone took offense at my last post. NOT SORRY. I’m sick n tired of tippy-toeing around peoples feelings, this year has whittled my tolerances to the nubs. If you were offended, ya might want to reflect on why. Use a mirror, it might help.
¤Water temps are sitting mid 40s right now. Will chill a body quick. I DO dress for the water but still have no desire to be in it. The gear is my insurance “just in case”.
Its 33°f outside right now. Fire in its place and the house is comfortably warm as a snoring dog and buzzy cat will attest.
And the beginnings of cabin fever are already kicking in.
Must be a symptom of an already f@ck€d up year. Its not even December and I’m itchin’ to do “sumpthin!”
Projects aside, and I could be working on any one of them, my body is wanting things more physical and demanding. I have a book to complete(yes Bruce, Its in process), i have another kayak to build (still need to get the log to the mill, but there are other aspects I could have fun with),,,
But. But. But.
Yeah, I HATE cold weather, shortened days, and having an accelerated metabolism. I mean, I’m 52, 6’2″ and still under 200#. My body despises ‘sitting still’ (and why I dont hunt or fish very often, unless I can stalk my quarrie.).
But Dio, you’re sittin’ still when you’re kayaking!
No, actually I am not. I may be in a seated position, but kayaking uses muscle groups from your head all the way down to your feet. Do a short run in WW and you’ll feel it tomorrow in places you’ve forgotten about. The first time I paddled 15 miles, I was sore for a week and not just in my shoulders and arms, but in my abs, hips and thighs: almost like I had been running.
Since I started kayaking, my waist line has been steadily shrinking and the love handles are melting off. My endurance is better and my back doesn’t ache like it used to.
And I still haven’t rolled successfully 🤬. Working on that, maybe I need water time with some chill to encourage getting upright, ,🥶 . I posted a short vid of my dryland practice and that is getting perfect, but its not IN water so,,, but my muscle memory is building, and I find myself getting upright with little to no effort now. I even noted in a hipflick practice that I came upright without realizing it when someone had asked me a question. (Small distraction syndrome/zen moment.) My biggest issue is just what I told another kayaker when we were out for the moonlight float: “my issue is in my head.” I need to follow Bruce’s advice and just go inverted and chat with the fish a few times, some wet exits, and just get used to being upside down. I know I can get out of all of my boats with ease, some better than others (Duh!k likes to trip me and snag shoes. And why I paddle her barefoot) so the exit is not my hang-up; my hangup is in being upside down underwater. Yeah, I gotta work on that.
But it’s stinking cold out, and I’m making oodles of excuses in my head, and creating a mixed bag of angst in my psyche. Fact is, NOW is the time when one really wants the rolling skill down pat; ‘Bombproof’ as the white water types like to call it.
Excuses are like A$$h♤les, every body has one and knows another.
Be the Bear!!! Maybe thats what I need. Kit up with cold water gear and just dive in, swim around a bit, THEN get in the kayak and do what I need. Only (legit) excuse I have there is ‘No partner’. Kinda don’t wanna risk things without a backup on hand. (I don’t enjoy soloing like I did. Funny being an introvert and lone wolf type wanting to ‘herd up’ 😝)
Note to the DNC: if ya gots nuttin ta hide, then allow a full recount, allow a third party, unbiased set of observers to watch. I’m sure there are some countries out there willing to offer such up, if it would shut down the turmoil.
I am quite certain that the entire country would understand and abide a delay in a SOLID answer to the shitstorm that has brewed out of this Selection cycle.
If you have nothing to hide, whats the problem?
But NONE of that is gonna happen. Why? Because “they won”. Doesn’t matter one whit if it was by hook and crook, or honest means. Not one: they got the votes and to hell with the rest of us for making the last 4 years a living hell for them.
https://theferalirishman.blogspot.com/2020/11/if-you-were-brainwashed-into-believeing.html?m=1I tried reading some screeds from the other side, one of which was at a site curiously named “The Soapbox” . I can’t finish any of the articles. Ever. The circular logic is deafening. I recall a philosophical argument about brainwashing and if someone were brainwashed and taught that everyone else was but they were normal, How could you show them the error?♧
I’m sure those on the left feel similar to me from an opposing POV.
And thats THE problem. Not the stolen Selection, not the hypocrisy of swallowing state lies and “living free”. The problem is that we are two entirely different mindsets with ZERO common ground anymore. We may speak what at the surface sounds like the same language, but isn’t. We live in the same neighborhoods and our kids (used to ) play on the same teams. But we are NOT THE SAME.
I’ve stated it and stated it time and again; WORDS HAVE MEANINGS, and to twist those meanings is the first bulkhead of progressivism. When I say ‘Science’, I am talking about a system designed to test theories, and if proven false, chuck it and come up with a new one. When Progessives say it, they have proven time and again the theory is all and will alter the tests to “prove” the theory.
Sounds more like a religion to me.
The chasm was widening before March, then Mr Floyd helped kick off more crap, (and I still feel that was a narrated event, blown out of proportion) and shit started doing the San Andreas Fault boogie. Divisions aren’t just in areas of the country, but within FAMILIES. There is one in my family that I am avoiding right now because of this situation (and her ‘sensitive nature’) . We are where we were in 1860, with families splitting over ideology.
And what really blows my mind the most? THEY FUCKING TOLD US THEY WERE GOING TO DO IT!!!! And now the Left-tards are singing that tune like it were a fucking Gospel sent down from heaven: ” we knew you’d say the election was stolen, now get out!!!”
When Obama won, I raised Cane, but not because I thought it was a scam election but because I could hear the double entendre of his words. The man was (is) a Master Orator, and people heard what they wanted to hear and not his real meanings. “Fundamentally Change ” is EXACTLY what we got and NOT FOR THE BETTER. We are at war with each other now. And if you try to tell me we aren’t, you need to take a trip to Portland or one of the other hotspots. (And look close, if you see a talking head in one of those places, 10:1 they are sporting body armor under that dress shirt and windbreaker.)
And that war has been very one sided, but if things keep rolling like they are, it will not stay that way. And as Sarah said, and I’m paraphrasing here: When we (conservatives) flip, its brutal and nonstop until completion. What does that mean? Go ask Hitler, or Mussolini. Go ask the Japanese soldiers on the islands of the Pacific.
Call the Congress critter of your choosing. Suggest that a recount is in order because an honest election wouldn’t have a problem, but to resist a recount means there are things to hide.
Trust me. That whole city has a shit ton of stuff they want to keep in the dark, and this election was just as much about that as it is a slap in the Face to the Trump Deplorables.
And just to clear the air, no, I didnt vote for Trump, I voted Libertarian. I KNEW this shit was gonna go off the chain and it didn’t make one three hundred millionth of a percent difference WHO I voted for. Remember, THEY TOLD US WHAT THEY PLANNED, AND WE DID NOTHING TO STOP IT!!!
♧I never had a good answer to it, and still don’t. I know I am not because I question literally EVERYTHING on a daily basis, even my own stance. And I do change my opinion when confronted with REAL EVIDENCE, not just feelings. Its has allowed me to evolve from that robotic mindset I was in 12 years ago to where I am now. And in those 12 years, I have learned more than I care to, about how truly evil a very small group of people are, and worse; how much control they influence.
Its All Hallows Eve, a full moon night, and the clocks reset tonight.
Some are thinking this may be the reboot to the horrid year that was kicked off back March with the clocks moving forward on a full moon night.
I dunno. But its slated to be a nice night with minimal cloud cover, and I did that whole Fakebook promo for a moonlight float on a local lake. Lots of thumbs up but only a couple ‘I’ll be there”s. It’s all good. Its a kiddies night more than anything. I’m single with an empty nest: I can go have some fun of my own.🎃🛶🌕👍
New arrows in the quiver.
And one yet to be born.
Its there in the upper right of that pic. Those are the forms and the two ‘horses’ will hold the strongback while I assemble things.
Going a different route this time’round. Strip built, not skin boat.
19′ expedition craft from Guillemot kayaks. Using coffeewood for the strips. Lighter than WRC and seems to hold up better as well. (All of my WRC paddles have split and cracked in short order, while my CW paddles just flex and bounce. ) The log is already cut and waiting for a trip to the mill, then I will begin building.
But I’m gonna have to find somewhere else to put all of these boats!!! LOL the porch is 8’x24′ and its getting just a might crowded.
I may be adding a small out building near the driveway as a kayak house. Doesn’t need to be much, just keep the sun and rain off ’em. I prefer the porch since snakes don’t frequent there, and I know from experiance that snakes will harbor in boats if they think its safe. But, space,,,
Yeah, theres a bit of addiction here. Its not like any one kayak will fill all the roles I play in. White water boats dont like open waters and distance, sea kayaks can handle rough stuff but dont do the tight twists and turns of river running very well. And the skinboats will do most all of it to some extent, and handle waves like a living creature, but they aren’t built like tanks like the WW boats are. They are also built around the hunting tool concept: not built for comfort so to speak.
The new WW boat is a trial of sorts. Its a creeker boat, meant for fast wild water. Similar in use to Betty Boof, but shorter and higher volume. Larger steeper bow shape to ride over any crazy stuff where Betty will submarine.
I don’t know that this is the direction I want to go in, but if I dont at least try it,,,,
I do know I want wide open living water in my future so the strip boat is a definitely on course. If I find I don’t want to follow a serious WW route, the Jefe is marketable. (Betty won’t be as she is 24 years old and ‘old skool’, and I like the way she fits me and the little rivers I do run.)
6 kayaks. One pilot. 3 totally different use-niches. A truck that may be able to haul 3 possibly 4 of those boats at any one time, but it works. I can haul a set of choices and decide by conditions what I’ll be playing in. Or load up a pair if partnering up in something specific.
(And I hear my ol-man grumbling “ya can only paddle one at a time,,,”) 🤣
As another once told me: Everything you want or desire is on the othereside of HARD.
The more effort you exert, the easier things become until they seemingly happen without effort.
But if you don’t put forth that effort first, nothing will ever happen.
Still manning the watchtower though I’ve little to nothing to add of late.
But I gots ta thinking about some larger aspects of things while driving twixt here and Charleston last week.
I can’t say how many times I have read or referenced analogy of current events to the Fall of the Roman Empire. And I can’t say that the analogy is wrong, but I am starting to think its off. Just as Malthus was wrong in his day, and for much the same reason: ignoring technology and species resilience.
IMO if we are going to see an Great Endarkenment, we are already well into it. In my observations, literacy is the biggest sign of that. Not that most can’t read, but that they are showing loss of comprehension and serious lack of attention span. If it takes more than 140 characters to express an idea, you are likely to lose 95% of a potential audience. I can’t count how many times I have heard, “in twenty words or less, what’s your point?” or some generalization of such.
With loss of comprehension and attention span, the next victim is critical thinking. We already see lack of Critical thinking skills by the simple fact of so few questioning the Heglian Dialects being shoveled around this year. Even when the numbers are obviously being skewed to perpetuate a fallacy, it seems that no one wants to ‘rock the boat’ and so remain compliant and obedient.
Our forefathers must be so proud of what 200+ years have produced.
What I am seeing that does fit the Fall analogy is the population replacement that took place near the very end of the Roman empire. By the time it was a worthless shell, the population of Rome itself had almost no Roman bloodlknes left. They had outmigrated long before.
We are aeeing that happening now as people leave the outskirta of certain cities to warmer friendlier areas. Its not a diaspora, yet! Come November, I would not be surprised to see caravans leaving said cities, loaded with all manner of desperate and haunted people looking for anywhere NOT at war.
Because we are, ARE, at war. Most people are still in denial of that fact because the body count is still below 100 corpses. When that figure starts to approach 4 and 5 digits,,,,
We are at war for ideals, just like we were back in 1860-65. One side still holds values that may seem cliche and labeled as racist or whatever, but they still hold value to those people (note, I am one of them) and the other side see those same values as the ruin of humanity or some such crap. Where a person stands amongst those two sides is a simple matter of degrees, but its not hard to find the divide these days. Hell, its in your face almost 24/7 now.
I touch upon one course of future in my recent book. When I was writing it, I had no idea just how far or how rapidly we could descend to this stage. I would like to think a “Divorce ” amongst the states could be done amicably, but I am a realistic in my pessimism. A break up is inevitable. And it will be heated and bloody. If it becomes a permanent breakup with this continent housing several nations like Central Europe, or one side dominating the other and a new nation/potentially old nation taking the forefront; who flippin knows but the fickle fates and God.
But Grear Endarkenment; not so much. There may be a slow down in innovation (already there on most fronts) and there may be decades where many formerly first world countries are vying for third world status, but it won’t be the centuries of the Dark Ages. Our technology is to advanced and education to ubiquitous to allow much more than a couple decades of slowdown. The only way this world would see such dark ages again is if the madmen started launching multi-megaton nukes with great abandon, shattering any semblance of our global structure and reducing world population back to 15th century levels(or less). Recall I said our tech and species resilience are the two factors keeping the Endarkenment at bay.
I know; such a lovely topic for a Friday post. Apologies to all.
Anywhoos, some memes to fit some of the above points.
Saw a few leaves falling.
I know the fall equinox has already passed and we are on the freight train towards solstice, but the winter train is always so much slower than the summer train.
Its not so much the weather that gets me, its the dead and empty feeling the landscape takes on. I get the anxiety ridden feeling that was doled out so well in the opening scenes of “the Book of Eli”.
OK, maybe I exaggerate a touch; there are some rather enjoyable memories with this time of year to quell the anxiety, but the world “going to sleep” always fills me with melancholy. I know heading back north those changes will seem accelerated, and that, well,,,, Yeah, *sigh*,,,,
Back on the road and its gonna be a long-ass day. And back to the millstone tomorrow, ugh!
Another first in a strange year.
But this one was fun.
Been a few years since I’ve been near salt water and never with a kayak. Didn’t accomplish much but learned a ton. Next time, Serena makes the trip and we’re gonna see what she really knows and I need to learn.
Read this if you haven’t already (not long BMS)
A month or so ago a shady group (I say shady because the red proponents chosen were all ‘anti-Trumpers’) assembled and ran a war-game scenario around our current
Selection cycle. I’m not going to link it as its been all around, but if you aren’t aware of it just search for ‘Transition Integrity Project’.
All of the points they bring up are being blamed on the red party but the Right see it very differently as being induced by the blue party.
Then we see information about Color Revolutions and how they play out and everything “Fits”.
And a question in the headlines this AM was ‘why are gun sales still on the rise?’
Short answer, IMO, the quiet ones see a damned big storm on the horizon and Mr. Colt was the true great equalizer.
We have a presidential election between a hated president (I still dont get all the hype but Ive covered it other times and places) and an obviously mentally incapacitated septigenerian. His wife has a reputation of “power hungry” that almost equals that of HRC without the list of dead. His running mate has a history as well and the whole combination is deeply embedded in politics since graduation of higher learning: never a day spent in private enterprise or free-market (cough) world.
I don’t like Trump as a person, but his lack of political history (prior to 2016) makes him a better candidate in my opinion. And while he may have some nasty past, ain’t a one of us in this world vying for angelic status.(be honest with yourself. We are all sinners in this world in some way.)
So we have one side accusing the other of trying to steal an election while making efforts to do the thing they say (projection). We have(currently legal) gun sales continuing to rise. (Of course there is no way to know about the under the table sales but I’d say that is moving in similar fashion). We have an open seat in the SCOTUS and a potential Constitutional crisis on the horizon. And the country is showing political/societal/ divides greater than those of the late 1840’s. Toss in the whole Pandemic confusion, democrat controlled cities burning with riots and protests,,,,
Hell the damned list of shit this year has brought on or exposed is too damned long. What it all boils down to is a perfect storm brewing and its all been manipulated by people in positions of power. The big question in my mind is this: who is fucking feeding this maelstrom? Things like this dont just happen. Whats the ultimate endgoal of the providers? NWO? Or Agenda 21 stuff (I know the Agenda 21 group dissolved but many of the members reformed under “The Great Reset” and much of their list resembles A21 garbage.)
Yeah yeah yeah,,, I just lost some of my readers to “conspiracy theory tinfoil hat wearer” accusations. Heres how I look at it. It IS another piece of information and true or not, the best place to hide anything is right out in the open. Mmaybe its bullshit? Maybe its a real thing but so unbelievable that 99% wil write it off as crap, if they even ever see it. Its information and sometimes (a lot lately) that information intersects and even snuggles up perfectly with current events. I don’t believe in coincidence. Once is happen stance, twice is the warning, three times is enemy action. This year I lost track of all those ‘co-wink-i-dinks’.
and we have no way of knowing its intensity or duration. Those that have set the winds to blowing think they can control it to achieve a certain outcome. Its almost as if they think they are God or somesuch.
Good luck with that, Gods proven to be the jealous type and doesn’t do competition very well.
Am I ‘proud to be ignorant’?
I take great pains to educate myself on issues. Most of my readers know my stance on the whole Covidiocy/Coronaphobia thing since its inception in March and that my research has led down certain paths (note: all of those points are starting to show I was right from the get-go) and yet I am the one who is ignorant?
I see claims of inequality being spewed left and right and yet NO ONE ever talks about the decades of welfare, hiring regulations and billions of dollars spent on minorities to bring them ‘up’ in status.
But I’m an ignorant ugly American?
No. I am the epitome of everything that people want to deride as evil and hateful. I’m an over the hill white skinned heterosexual male.
People talk about white privilege. To be honest, I have no clue what they flipping mean by this because I have never been privileged of anything. What I have, I gained through hard effort and planning. No one ‘gave’ me anything, without a serious investment on my end first. My income is derived through my renting my life to others for short spells, not a promised benefit or attempt to “make me equal “.
My gains have been through withholding immediate gratification, knowing that the longterm will be better than the here and now.
But I’m the ugly ignorant American.
There are days where I read the headlines, scan the FB posts, see the world at large and wonder “when did I fall into this asylum of insanity?”
But I’m the ugly ignorant American.
And y’all wonder why I love my kayaks? Hell, its my temporary escape from the ugly truth of what horrid things this country is headed to. Its my ‘zone’ where ‘the deer and the antelope play’ and I can IGNORE the brash and hateful world playing out at large. Maybe in that case I am IGNORANT as I would rather walk away from this shit and let y’all do those great and terrible things to each other, WITHOUT my participation. I’ve seen death, horrible death in burned out vehicles on the highway of death in Kuwait. Y’all have NO IDEA what your ‘good intentions’ are leading to.
But I’m the ugly ignorant hateful white male American.
God help us.
All of that is now this.
I won’t try to emulate the Late Great Remus, but thats my woodpile report for now. Three more loads like that last and I will be full up for the winter. I still had half a row left from last year, but this one is looking to be a doozy with an earlier start. I have another shed, half this size, I may end up filling if our cold snap carries out much further. Added insurance you could say.
And my kayaks are feeling quite neglected this week. Will next week too since I have to make a run back to my old stomping grounds of yore to help family out. I may drag Betty
along in the off chance I can get in some paddle time on my ol neighborhood river. Nothing wild about it, some dull class one stuff and a lot of open slow moving areas, but its cleaned up a ton since I was a kid and any seat time is a welcome addition right now. Most rivers hereabouts are dragging hulls low and I am betting the same applies up there, so, Betty is the only choice if I get that shot. She rides higher and has that thick-skinned whitewater hull to take some abuse.
But its back to the grind(er) and burning metal tomorrow. A week behind as usual but steadily gaining to the end of that (current) list. (It always hits in loads that need done yesterday it seems) There is ALWAYS more after that, even if its just some strange shuffle of tool bags and a different hat to wear for a day. “The price of being good” is what the bossman said to me once.
Lets start this ball rolling by reminding my readers of a fact about me. I’m an INTJ on the Myer Briggs personality indicator. One thing about INTJs is emotions, or seeming LACK of. We despise public emotiinal displays. We have them, feelings, emotions, and usually quite strongly, but choose to rein them in and keep our heads and wits about us. When another ‘vents’ emotionally in our presence, (and I speak from my own standpoint, other INTJs may have variations of this) its the psychic equivalent of someone puking all over us.
So lets kick off this little shindig and see if WordPress decides I’m unfit for their servers.
Race, breeds, species, etc.
Mere words, but words are the weapon of the left as documented by George Orwell so eloquently in 1984. Twist the meaning, enforce the new one through ‘social shaming’ and the sheep will enforce your edicts with no fight.
Break it down: I AM a racist! I think the human race is at the peak of current evolution on this planet. I like being a human, a thinker, tool user, mover of mountains and manipulator of atoms. I may not be those last two specifically, but the human RACE is. Now like all species/races, there are breeds within the basket. In Canines, you have wolves, coyotes, rottweilers, labradors and terriers, etc. Ask any dog breeder which can interbreed and they will say “all of ’em”.
Same applies to the Human race. Black, White, Brown, Yellow, Red: Doesn’t matter, we can interbreed. And given time, can create new breeds within the species.(and here we are 1000000+ years since Lucy passed on, with many many breeds running amok.)
So yeah, I’m racist. You are too unless you’re doing unspeakable acts to sheep or something. (We won’t take that thought any further though: Ick!!!)
See, until somewhere in the beginning of the 20th century, “Race” meant “Species” but that shifted around the time of a certain social justice movement that had good intentions but has become the loose cannon under the decks busting holes in the hull during storm seas.
What brought all of this out in me was a post by a friend. It was a meme stating that Doctors are the equivalent of the police against black women. It all came down to a link to a CDC doc stating that Black women in the US have a higher infant mortality rate per capita than white women. There were other breeds mentioned (people really hate that term since it seemingly makes us ‘animals’. Uh, yeah, guess what? WE ARE!!!) Like Inuit and others. I’m gonna touch on the Inuit first. Ever been to Alaska? Hint. IT’S BIG!!!. Lots and lots of open areas with few clumps of ‘city’. Medical care, especially out on the fringes may be non-existent. Higher infant mortality is likely to go hand and hand with that.
But back to article and the black side of it. In the US, there are more Black single mothers on welfare, by percentage of breed, than White. They have access to medical facilities, access that costs them little or nothing, and they have a higher infant mortality rate than whites do.
I’m betting that if you took only low income Whites on welfare, into the count, those numbers would likely get much closer to equal.
Lifestyle. Diet. Mental stability even.
I don’t see many Blacks in the area I live in. Of those I do see, THEY AREN’T ON WELFARE. But there are plenty of white families that are. If I go grocery shopping at the beginning of the month, I can spot the ones on welfare, not by appearance, but by food choices, and quantity. Crap, lots of processed, boxed meals, junkfood, and moonpies: usually covering 2 carts stacked to overflowing. One of those carts may be soda-pop only; over-loaded so much, you can hear the bearings starting to gall. As for personal appearance; usually pasty-skinned, grossly obese, and often quite odorous.
I’m not saying welfare is a bad thing, but I am saying generational welfare is. Many have been ‘hooked’ into easy money. And our welfare system has become a free-for-all that caters to failure. Dropped out of school because it was ‘too hard’ and can’t get a job because you completely lack any skill: sign up for the dole, Gubmints gonna hep ya out. Get busted for felonious assault and do 5 years in the Pen, can’t get a job ’cause of your record; same thing, gubmints gonna do ya right (till ya end up back in said pen)
So my question becomes this: you are being supported by the state, provided food, housing, medical care, etc; and infant mortality is the Doctors fault?
I cry Bull!!!
All of this, to me, is yet another symptom of the underlying disease that is eating the corpse of this country apart. This symptom is lack of personal responsibility, lack of accepting the consequences of personal decisions. No one holds a gun to your head when you’re scarfing down that crap food, or destroying your stomach lining by inhaling liter after liter of ‘pop’ (and I have been guilty of that in the past so I know where I am coming from)
It isn’t racism thats causing this, its poor decision making.
We may have a prejudice issue within these states, but that is a human nature condition, hardwired into us for survival and adapted by social conditions. For example. A gentleman just came into my shop asking if he could get some apples off the tree at the end of the driveway. Even offered to pay for ’em. No one around here pays for those apples and I wasn’t going to make him the exception. I even gave him a bag to put them in. BTW, he’s a Black man. Had on farmer john overalls°, I could smell soap when he stood near me talking, didn’t act like a thug and was polite (more polite than many white people I know!!!). His skin color had NOTHING to do with ANY PART OF OUR CONVERSATION and I assumed nothing about him based on said skin color. His overt politeness was likely due to past prejudiced conflicts, and I can fully understand that as I do know what this country has been like for decades.
But he found a friendly person in this Buckra. (Look it up. Its a real word)
Prejudicial treatment can be an issue, but then, if you look like a thug, walk like a thug and carry a bad attitude, why shouldn’t someone else assume you are a thug????
A duck is a duck is a duck, and no one can ever say its a dog. (Well, ya can but people are gonna give you funny looks)
And its not ONLY lack of personal responsibility; again, just a symptom IMO. That symptom is encouraged by the welfare state: why should you accept responsibility when the remainder of an entire society is picking up the tab to keep allowing you to suck air? Screw up with Johnny Law and do a small stint with three hots and a cot, then back out for more fun n games. Screw up and get pregnant? Well who cares who the daddy is if the state cuts a check and gives you a place to raise the kid. Why not do it again and double your income? Notice I am not pointing at whites or blacks or any one group in particular; I am blaming the SYSTEM!!!!!! There is a saying in politics “tax what you don’t want, subsidize what you do want”. So if they keep subsidizing failure, then they WANT people to fail. People stuck on the teat don’t strive, and that lack of ambition is the goal IMO.
So when People are whining about SYSTEMIC RACISM, they are whining about a system they continue to support, and likely because they are part of the system in some way.
Question EVERYTHING. The whole thing is a game and the rules are not ever in your favor. There is no free lunch; someone is paying for it, and it is NEVER the politicians that do.
° And to any yahoo that says ‘you saw those farmer johns and thought ‘he was being a good blackman”; you can kiss my hairy white ass. You’re thinking that shows your “racism”. Farmerjohn coveralls are common wear to many older southern rural people, white, black, or brown. And if you live north of the Tennessee/Kentucky zone, you probably have ZERO clue how little southerners have ‘racial’ issues. Especially amongst the older people (40+) and out away from the cities.
How does business happen? Value.
You have a product, service, idea, that others VALUE, and you will make income.
Its that damned simple.
So, what’s so wrong with Capitalism? You give, you receive, and if the product or service is lacking, the life of said business will soon evolve or expire. Others offer same or better and Competition ‘improves the breed’. As long as there is competition, things will improve. Remove that, and it all stagnates and regresses or in the longer term, rot from the inside.
What I love about TRUE capitalism is how it follows rules just like evolution does. Environment determines course and growth, and yes, both can be manipulated, but in the long run, the rules will prevail.
What we are seeing now is backlash from ‘natural rules’ against years (decades?) Of manipulation. Economists call these times “corrections”, and I find that term quite fitting. Yup! It’s likely gonna be a painful ride and as long as the corrections are allowed to happen, eveything will improve in the long run. The ‘other option’ is to allow full control by outside influences but that means surrendering ALL of your choices about how you earn, receive, and use your lucre.
No thanks, that, to me, rings of slavery.
Slight lean into the turn here,,,,
I was belittled by an ‘educator’ on.my use of the term ‘Socialism ‘. He swore that we have a freely capitalist country, the freest on the planet.
Umkay!!! Sure. Sell me that bridge outside of Phoenix, the one that used to reside over the Thames in London. (Google it, I ain’t kiddin’)
I don’t think I need to go to extremes in showing examples of where he is wrong, but what we do have is, IS Socialism Lite. One third of our country (may be a bit more now) works for Government or some form of enforcement arm for G. Another quarter are on some form of welfare or Social security. Blue collar is a very small percentage with small business sharing rougly a similar rate. Large business has downsized and outsourced to maximize margins, and investors are mixed throughout all of the above. Roughly 1/3-2/5thss support the remainder; how is this NOT socialism?
Oh, maybe its their use of a dictionary published in 2019, while I use one that was first written in 1790,
And that’s another reason we will see a correction. Trying to hide the truth by manipulation of meanings has similar consequences for backlash. One will be monetary, the other in social reality.
I get it, I really do. I understand the Siren’s song of Socialism. Hell, everything is a business model, Right? What’s not to like about getting a better return of investment for mediocrity. We have an entire group of people in this country that make serious bank on it. I call them politicians.
But I digress…
I’ll give you a short example of what free market ideals can do using an analog comparison
Insurance. (And Heinlein fans already know where this one is headed, LOL)
Say ya want health insurance or Life insurance in a truly free market (no regulations and no guarantees) who do you talk to?
The Bookies. The guys that set the odds at the gaming tables, sporting events etc. That is all insurance really is, some one setting the odds, taking the anty, and taking the chance of losing. If you want a better ‘rate’ you sample several bookies and make your choice. It may cost you (think Lloyds of London costs. And guess what, that is Exactly how Lloyds operates. They’ll give you odds on your flippin VOICE and sell you a package.) But you have your ‘insurance. The disreputable ones won’t last a month and the honest ones will charge and payout as they should. As for taking them to court (have you tried that with ‘modern’ insurance agencies?) Well, in a free market world, there would be no real courts system in place, but you could hire arbitration. Both sides would cover the hire, and pledge to honor the decision no matter how it fell out. The dishonest would try to ‘settle out of court’ to keep things hush-hush. (Gee, sounds DAMNED familiar, doesn’t it?)
Provide Value, be honest, be accountable,
Things we see everyday, but oh so rarely from those on high now.
And I thought I bring a little levity along to start it right.
I’ll post up, mehbe, Sunday.
Y’all has a good’un. I’ll do the same.
Back at the R&D for a short time. Spent a few hours in Google Sketch up playing around with a thought or two. Then I took advantage of a piece of equipment we have at work. I didn’t utilize it to its full extent, but damned if that thing doesn’t impress the hell out of me. It’s a rather large water jet table of which my little project didn’t even cover 10% of its size. This thing is monstrous for cutting down large sheets of steel.
Anywhoos, here is a pic if what we cut out.
Brought it home and checked it on balance and it’s dead flat. Spun it up just for giggles and it spun there for quite a while with no wobble other than the typical gyro yaw precession. I used a leaf blower to spin it up faster and it impressed me further. ROFL, I am such a big kid when it comes to stuff like this.
So, yeah, it’s a hub for five blades, only this one is for a VAWT not a HAWT. I am cutting the blades from a section of sewer pipe I have left from putting in my septic system and am fabricating some struts to attach them into place. The genset is my old genny, now modified with a new stator and neodymium magnet. (Essentially a Delco stator with a permanent magnet instead coils ) .
I haven’t finished every thing yet, still cutting and balancing blades, but when completed, I plan on testing it for awhile before going whole hog and installing it. I still have the old tower base and tower sections I can use for testing and since it is a vertical unit, turbulence is less of an issue for it. (Granted, it’s still an issue,,,) I also plan on making a testing station to mount into the bed of the truck to take to the MTR strip job so I can get some serious clean winds on a mountain top.
A few points I am considering
- Blade count
- Blade width
- Blade length
- Diameter of finished unit.
Going by some of what I have learned with the HAWT units, all of these are factors; looking at the design in 3d I see that 5 blades gets the most surface area into the wind with the least amount of resistance. At least visually it seems so. Two blades will be fully catching the wind, two will be tacking while the fifth will be oposing it. So, for now, 5 seems to be the best for a small unit, but plans may change when exposed to real world conditions. Blade width is at 4″ right now because that is 1/3rd the circumference of the pipe I have. I am thinking that will give as close to a wing shape as I can hope for without heating and bending plastic. I am looking at getting some 12ga aluminium sheet and bending it for a permanent install, but for now, plastic will suffice for testing. Admittedly, 6″ would catch more wind, and that is what the original design called for, bur 4″ is what I have.(I hate to waste money). Even so, there is just as much surface area on this 4″ blade as the is on the wind grabbers on my current rig in the air. I should see some activity even if it’s not sufficient for my needs.
But that is why we have R&D, right?
I will post more as this progresses.
A few of my readers have contacted me for further details about my alt-energy setup. One of those points is something I felt rather needed sharing. The blades.
I have looked around at several sites for aftermarket blades and almost every one of the dealers has stated the same thing or similar. I won’t go into too much detail but the statement is this, “perfectly balanced “.
Gotta say, Caveat Emptor, let the buyer beware. Only one set I bought was even close to balanced correctly. But, this article isn’t to slam any dealer/manufacturer, it’s to instruct you in how to balance your blade set, bought or made.
Moat small turbine systems keep the swept area under 6’diameter. There is a reason to this, and that reason is speed. Larger blade sets turn slower even though they generate more torque. The smaller gen sets don’t need oodles of torque, but do need the speed. Higher speeds tend to show balance issues in much more dramatic ways: think unbalanced tire at greater than highway speeds.
You are going to need some tools right off the bat
- A scale, accurate to 100th ounce or in grains,, and it needs to be able to handle the weight of one of your blades. Mine can handle 1Kg or 2.2#.
- A lawnmower blade balancer. I found mine for $4 at a Do-it-best hardware store.
- Wheel weights . A strip of 1/4 Oz stick on type cost me $2.50 at Napa.
Now, weigh each blade and note it down. I write it on each blade as well as note it on paper. If they are within a 1/4oz of each other, you are almost done. If not, work is about to get under your skin.
Blade construction at this point can save you or grind you. If the blades are polymer or ABS, you can “trim” them to match each other. I use a deburring tool and scrape LIGHTLY along the trailing edge to trim down weight. Go slow, you can’t put back on! A couple of passes, weigh it, note difference and repeat as needed. Using this, I as able to get my raptor blades within 1/100th of an ounce of each other. A problem you may hit is the scraper/deburring tool gets some chatter in it, and the cut ends up ragged. Stop, get a fine flat file, and smooth that area out. It may not hurt anything, but then, it may make a butt-ton of noise. Why chance it.
Now, if your blades are aluminum, you are going to go about it a similar fashion, but you really need to focus your material removal to the trailing edge as far out from the hub end as possible. You don’t want to take too much either so only do this if they are pretty close. If they are wildly different, contact the seller and raise hell.
Now, balancing things. First word od caution: do this indoors with no air movement. The balancer is VERY sensitive and a minor breeze will screw you up a lot. With the raptor style blades, it was pretty straight forward. Mount the blades to hub, set hub on balancer, watch for any tilt. If you see it, lay a 1/4oz weight opposing the tilt (uphill side) but do not attach it,yet. You are going to have to shift things around until your are satisfied.
The aluminum blades are a bit different. The way they are bent, they are top heavy and will skew all attempts at proper balance. Here’s the trick, on paper, lay out where you are going to put what blade on the hub. Subtract the weights on adjacent blades and note it down. You will cut a weight to that difference for each pair. Three blades, three weights, etc. Now, with the blades facing up (wind side up) put it on the balancer. It’s going to try and tilt no matter what you do, so be patient. Now place each of the three weights on the blade near the hub where the blade and hub meet; the weight will go on the lighter of the pair noted. (IE:if blade 1+2 have a 1/4oz difference, the 1/4oz weight will go on the lightest blade, next is the 2-3 pair, then the 3-1 pair. ) . Observe any changes. If it steadies down without wobbling crazy, mark your position with the sharpie. If not, move the weights around a bit at a time, one at a time and observe. You nearly need the patience of Job for this part.
Ok, so you finally get the thing to settle down and you marked where the weights were at that time. Take the weights off, flip the hub wind side down (you may need to use a can or bucket to raise the balancer up) and watch. Now it is likely leaning all tilted so place your weights on the blades oposite your marks. It should go dead flat at this point.if it does not, no worries, shift your weights one blade counter clockwise. Observe. Repeat as needed until satisfied. You may even find removing one weight will improve things. A little trial and error is in order here.
Now, it may sound like I am jerking your leg on this, but when you mount the weights, DO NOT place them where you made your marks, on either side. They will be subjected to far too much centrepital force and will fly off. You will mount them on the blade nearest the hub and preferably between a set of bolts as reinforcment. The difference in the adjustment is so minor, it won’t hurt a thing.
The reason you want to balance your gear should be obvious, as in longevity of your investment, but also in performance. An unbalanced blade set will actually self brake before it really starts to work. It may not be seen at first, but sit observing an unbalanced unit while metering it’s output, and the problem will stand out glaringly. You’ll see the voltage climbing and then just stop, if not reverse. At the same time, you may even see the guy lines shaking if not the whole tower. Due to the fact that the genny is being powered by the wind, it will never climb past that state, unlike in a wheel on a car that shimmies at one speed, but settles down above or below it. The genny just can’t accelerate past that point. And an unbalanced unit WILL fail at some point, and usually by sending the blades flying off willy nilly.
Hope this helps someone else in solving an issue, or better yet, in avoiding one. If you buy your blades, check ’em anyway, no matter what claims are made by the dealer. If you make your own, you should be doing this as a routine anyway.
