Believe nothing, no matter where you read it, or who said it – no matter if I have said it! – except it agree with your own reason and your own common sense.” – Siddhartha Gautama, a.k.a. the Buddha

zero dark thinks,

Grizzy woke me up at some ungodly hour and my mind is a wanderin’ about,,,,

Over at Sarahs house, she put up a post that has me doing some reflection on life, and interestingly enough, I also wrapped up a re-read of “To sail beyond the sunset” RAH yesterday.   To those that haven’t read it, its the memoirs of Lazaraus Longs mother, Maureen Smith, and is sort of a fill-in for some of “Time enough for Love” which is the memoirs of LL.

One of the things that is brought up in both is “Rejuvenation” and extremely long life-spans.  Now, to some this may seem a boon, but to be honest, I think I would take a pass on living past that century mark.   I’m only in my fifties and the amount of upheaval in society I have seen in just the last 20,,,,   Dunno, but I don’t think I would want to be exposed to that much necessary adaptation, to keep up with “the normal”.   As Sarah states, we (hoomans) have a unique standing in the animal world: we mostly live in the now,  but can see the past and formulate for the long future.   Unlike my kittehs, where the NOW is it, and only vague memories affect it (BIG SCARY DOG memory affects attitudes to all dogs in the now,,,) but there is zero thought to the next moment or year.  TIME means nothing to them, NOW is all they know or care about.   (and if you have read “Man! Alive!” (one of my ‘pages’ above), some of this subject is covered in there too, and maybe coloring my thinking on it some.)

One of the biggest things that separate us from the ‘animal world’ is language.  Being able to communicate complicated and abstract ideas past the obvious tactile NOW, and being able to record it for longevity (from cave paintings to printed word, we have always attempted to record our existence,,, another point that makes us unique,,,). I have mentioned this language thing before in a post about why cats and dogs will never get along unless they are raised together: they have a language barrier even though they both read body language.  A tail wag on a dog is quite different from the ‘wag’ of a cats tail, but the dawgums never seem to learn the difference unless they are raised from pups with said cat, and even then, can’t translate it to other cats.

Humans have no such problems, or more accurately, MANY humans have no such problems; there are those that just flat refuse to learn,,,,   And that is part of why I wouldn’t want to carry on past that century mark.

You look at the past, see how human civilization has grown, peaked and collapsed and realize, as a species, we DON’T learn from our mistakes; we only learn at the individual level but that doesn’t stop the madness of ‘doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results’.

and yet, the problem always comes back down to “power hungry” vs “leave me alone”: at every major turn of civilization, the leave me alones kinda sorta win because the power hungry turn on themselves and destroy everything.  The leave me alones slowly build back, but the more successful of them always attract the power hungry that take over.   I have seen it in small groups that built up something fun, and some powerhungry jerk comes along and co-opts it and the dream turns sour or malevolent: usually displacing the original builders venomously. (or worse, the “fun thing’ gets popular enough, it poisons the mind of the builders and they become like Bezos or Gates,,,,)

Think about this, if the founders were to come back today, do you think for one moment that our ‘leadershit’ would welcome them with open arms?   (maybe they would, but there would be a knife in one hand so they could stab them in the back,,,,IMO).

Nope, they would ostracize them, call them every foul name that they slander us with, and then some, and blame them for every failing that is taking place.

Because people like the power hungry do not ‘take the blame’, or ‘own it’: thats not how they think.   And us ‘leave us alones’ that aren’t following the script to THEIR Nirvana are the problem, not the fact that their plan is ‘ripe’ like week old road kill in high summer,,,,

While the Leave me Alones ALWAYS outnumber the power hungry, the power hungry have an advantage: they know how to attract the attention of the “tell me’s”.   The Leave me Alones want others to become self-sufficient but that doesn’t work for the ‘tell me’s’, they want to be lead, and the power hungry are more than happy to gain that ‘workforce’,,,  Even establishing a system that supports and encourages the mentality.

Until the system collapses.

And the genetic code of Humans being what it is, there is no chance of working that out of the code.  It is what it is, and always will be,

and I wouldn’t want to live as an immortal watching that cycle repeat continuously, always having to adapt to the ever shifting sands of societal whims, knowing that, no matter how much effort was spent, nothing would stop the cycle.

maybe thats why I haven’t been saying a whole lot about the FRAUD of late,,,,

Veellllly Interessstink line of thinking that right there is. Didn’t see the link to Man Alive till you pointed it out. It’s hiding out past the right border – had to scroll a bit, but I found it! Dam – just the opening few lines got me curious. Yet more reading.

Got my copy of Wings 2 days ago. Another interesting line of thinking, that I hadn’t considered. I can only read about 1/2 hour, though, so it’ll take me a while – neck & shoulders cramp up pretty bad if I do more (and I really wanna do that!). it is what it is.

    Y’all take care,

Too often we think we know,
    Seldom realizing how little though.
“We live in a uniquely dangerous moment, in which rootless and seemingly futureless people, armed with a cult like certainty in the omnipotence of their delusions, try to shape the future in their own, limited image, corrupted by an anti-human philosophy.”

Another highly influential read. Zen and the art of motorcycle maintenance.
    One of my personal favorites
