Believe nothing, no matter where you read it, or who said it – no matter if I have said it! – except it agree with your own reason and your own common sense.” – Siddhartha Gautama, a.k.a. the Buddha

Greyman vs self reliance(delayed post )

We had a hella storm blow up tonight, straight line winds, massive rain, I even saw my wind genny furl for the first time.  Knocked out power all over the area.
It got me to thinkin’ ’bout this whole off-grid thing from a tactical stand point.  Luckily, most of my neighbors are relation. There are one or two that are not, but we are on good terms with them, even if we don’t interact much.  But what if (you do play the ‘what if ” game, don’t you?) I didn’t live amongst friends?  How would I approach this situation, or, more specifically, retain a certain amount of security?  One night likely wouldn’t strain relations amongst neighbors, but a situation like I was in in Cincinnati back in 2008, where power was out for a week or more, well, I could see some people developing a certain amount of jealousy or envy, and that could  lead to more of the seven deadly sins.
Let’s imagine that one is completely off grid, raising a decent garden, minimal livestock to provide food as well as breeders, and has ZERO need of most day to day that the rest of us take for granted. Imagine that person in a situation where the infrastructure has failed and what others nearby could react like.  How do you establish security then?
My only thought starts with, you had better start that security  premise long before you need it.  Don’t advertise your preparations, be aware of power outages and practice light discipline, muffle the hell out your generators (that sound carries like you wouldn’t believe, even the quietest Honda genny is loud when ‘normal’ background noises are removed) etc etc etc.

Just some thoughts on things.

Wasn’t sure those storms were near you or not. Glad you only got good test on your power system….plenty twisters too close for comfort here this spring and Noah type rains, but no flooding my area…added work on road to keep washouts to minimum….auctioned possible FM companion, but that ain’t gonna work, more talk than walk, good in rack, but not much else..she got the message and been scarce of late, lol….I’m still looking, lol….put in 1550 gallon roof water capture system at brothers place…filled up in two days…went with the white poly in lieu of black due to heat and algae problems…lots of shit doing, but nothing worth mentioning…yep, ticks plenty here, had to hold old Rufus down to get one off corner of his eye, big ole pussy, lol…use honey on any bug bites, will look for TTO next Wally run for dog food or paper goods…about only time I go there anymore…stay safe bro, try super glue on the cuts…

I’m thinking that for the first week, turning all meat into jerky from the freezer. Along with having barbeque , just as the neighbors will be doing….
Also drying any vegies that can be dehydrated….
After a week, descreetly , very cautiously ! Approach and beg for food from all nearby ….not because we will need ! To gather Intel as to whom might be prepared and whom to watch out for…
For the first month at least, maintain the down low of the destitute.
Absolutely no cooking, No generaters running ! Only using wind and solar for lights, pump etc. With blacked out Windows.
During this first month of silence, form security with those close by and “thin out likely trouble makers ? ”
One must have others in order to survive, but they should only be other self sufficient tribe members. Harsh world but real….

Yes generators are an issue, both for noise and smell. Once all engines are no longer used, you’ll be able to smell them running !
That also goes for cooking food. I’d say do this at night, when most are asleep and in the dark cannot tell where the odor is coming from as easily.

Living where you do Dio, I’d say your heat source is going to be like a beacon. Leading the cold, hungry to your doorstep. This an issue where added heat is required……

Y’all gotta work on that companionship issue, like wonderdog is…
Maybe that “auction ” idea is viable….mail order Russian babe ? LMFAO

    • I like the idea of “begging” as Intel gathering; hadn’t thought of that one.
Heat may not be the problem you think around here. Literally every house within a mile (likely further) of me heats with wood burners. There are a few that are still using coal as well. Wood smoke will be pretty common here’bouts.
Companionship is an ongoing process, just not advertisin’ it. 😛
